  4.     AWARDED. To Ricci Adan, widow of Richard Adan, a
  5. 22-year-old actor stabbed to death by jailhouse author Jack
  6. Henry Abbott in 1981: $5.6 million in damages and $2 million for
  7. the pain Adan suffered; in New York City. Novelist Norman
  8. Mailer, impressed with Abbott's book In the Belly of the Beast,
  9. campaigned for his release from prison in Utah, where he had
  10. been serving a sentence for murder. Two months later, Abbott
  11. assaulted Adan outside an East Village restaurant. In the suit
  12. Abbott acted as his own lawyer. He argued that he was so adept
  13. with a knife that his victim had died instantly, feeling no
  14. pain. Adan, he said, was "not worth a dime."
